Requirements For Costa Rica Citizenship Through Residency
In this category a foreign citizen can obtain citizenship if he is a resident and has lived in Costa Rica for at least seven years. Each month spent abroad will be deducted from your total stay in the country which means that if you have been abroad for 2 months since you were granted residency you will need to apply for 7 years and 2 months after being granted residency.

Provide two witnesses that have known the applicant for at least 7 years.
Foreign documents such as ackground checks and birth certificates must be authenticated to be used in Costa Rica. Background checks must be issued within three months prior to application. In addition documents must be translated into Spanish.

Requirements For Costa Rica Citizenship Through Marriage
In this category a foreign national can obtain citizenship if they have been married to a Costa Rican citizen for at least two years and have been in the country for at least two years after the marriage. Each day spent abroad will be deducted from the 730 days stay in the country requirement.
